SUNDAY MORNING

I woke up because the sun was shining through my bedroom window and right into my eyes. I scooted further down the bed so the light wouldn’t make me blind. That was better. A couple of birds were chirping outside. It made me smile.

Fox was asleep in the blanket den I had made for him months ago. I had never taken it down because I hoped he would return one day. I would have slept next to him on the floor but he was restless and kept kicking me in the side. And his paws were like ice cubes when they touched my back.

I sat up and lifted the blanket closest to my bed. Fox was laying in the middle of the den on his stomach with all four hairy legs straight out like an airplane. He was facedown with his tongue stickingout. There was slobber all over my favorite pillow. Yes, I let him sleep on my favorite pillow. He could keep it now. Yuck!

I laid back down and thought about how perfect everything was. Fox was back with us and not in any more danger. He could stay there forever.

My mom threw my bedroom door open and rushed into my room. “Jonah! Get up right now.” Her hands were in the air. “Why are you still in bed?”

I didn’t know why she was so upset. I had plenty of time to get ready for Sunday School and church. My alarm clock hadn’t gone off yet. I sat up and blocked the sun from my eyes. I looked over at my clock on the table next my bed.

Only, it wasn’t there! Oh, no. Where was my clock? I jumped out of bed and said, “Sorry.”

My mom had her arms crossed and was tapping a foot on the floor. She didn’t like being late for anything. “Breakfast is on the kitchen table. Hurry up.” She stormed out of the room, shaking her head.

I lifted the den blankets and yelled at Fox to wake up. He grabbed a sheet and pulled it up over his head. And that’s when I saw it. My alarm clock was crushed and broken into pieces by Fox’s back paws.
